Denver vs. Colorado Springs: Which Should You Visit?
When planning a trip to Colorado, deciding between visiting Denver or Colorado Springs depends on factors like your budget, interests, and travel plans.
Denver, known for its cultural flair, offers a rich variety of art galleries, museums, professional sports venues, outdoor dining experiences, and an impressive lineup of craft breweries.
On the other hand, Colorado Springs caters more to those with a passion for outdoor adventure. With the striking Pikes Peak towering in the distance, this city is ideal for exploring red sandstone rock formations at Garden of the Gods and enjoying a range of hiking trails suited for various fitness levels.
Colorado Springs provides diverse activities for visitors of all ages, making it a great option for families, solo travelers, or groups seeking an outdoor experience.
If possible, I suggest exploring both cities. Since Denver is roughly 70 miles away (about an hour and a half drive) from Colorado Springs, visiting one as a day trip from the other is entirely feasible. Both destinations showcase the unique charm of Colorado, making your decision less about choosing one over the other and more about how much time you have to enjoy the best of both worlds.
How Long Should You Stay in Colorado Springs?
As previously mentioned, a day trip to Colorado Springs from Denver is entirely doable. However, if you’re considering a dedicated trip to Colorado Springs, you might be wondering how long your visit should be.
During my stay, I spent 5 days enjoying fifteen engaging activities in Colorado Springs, which I’ll discuss further in this post. Based on that experience, I believe Colorado Springs is ideal for a weekend escape or a two-night stopover as part of a longer Colorado journey.
If you have the flexibility to extend your trip to five to seven nights, it will allow you to explore even more of what the region has to offer. You could visit nearby Manitou Springs or embark on longer hikes in the breathtaking Pikes Peak area.
Additionally, you can use Colorado Springs as a base for day trips to other Front Range destinations like Denver, Boulder, or Fort Collins, expanding your exploration of Colorado’s diverse landscapes.
Top 15 Activities for Adults in Colorado Springs
When I traveled to Colorado Springs, I had my sights set on two iconic attractions: Pikes Peak and Garden of the Gods – some of the most impressive locations in the area.
After arriving, I quickly realized that a two-night stay didn’t feel long enough. There was an abundance of activities to enjoy, as well as great places to eat and drink!
Although I spent 5 days in Colorado Springs, I didn’t manage to experience all the exciting things this destination offers. However, I highly recommend these enjoyable activities for adults visiting Colorado Springs, whether you’re traveling solo, as a couple, or in a group.
Some of these will also be fun for families with kids but at the very least, parents and older siblings are sure to enjoy them!
1. Experience the Majestic Rocky Mountains from Pikes Peak
A visit to the summit of Pikes Peak is a must for sweeping views across the Colorado Rockies, vast blue skies and amber waves of grain, and the poem-turned-patriotic-tune “America The Beautiful”.
The hype is that it’s ‘America’s Mountain,’ but Pikes Peak isn’t even the tallest mountain in Colorado. It is the 31st tallest mountain in the state at an elevation of 14,115 feet.
During my visit, I boarded the Pikes Peak Cog Railway departing from nearby Manitou Springs. The scenic nine-mile ride to the summit provided stunning views, from the golden hues of Aspen trees to the rugged landscape. As we climbed higher, the breathtaking sight of distant mountain peaks unfolded before me, creating an unforgettable experience.
The cog railway first opened in 1891, but the new trains and tracks were served up with a modern visitor center when it reopened in May 2021. At the environmentally friendly Pikes Peak Summit Visitor Center, certified by LEED standards, you can delve into engaging exhibits that cover a range of topics, including the mountain’s rich history, its diverse geography, changing climate, recreational opportunities, and efforts to protect and preserve the surrounding environment.
A visit to the Pikes Peak Summit Visitor Center wouldn’t be complete without trying their renowned doughnuts. Prepared using a time-honored recipe dating back to 1916, these treats are expertly fried at an altitude of 14,115 feet. Alongside the freshly made doughnuts, the visitor center offers various amenities, including restrooms, free Wi-Fi, water-filling stations, bicycle racks, and a gift shop for souvenirs.
While the cog railway is a popular choice, you have two other options for reaching the top of Pikes Peak – hiking or driving the Pikes Peak Highway. For experienced hikers, the 13.5-mile trail to the summit can take between 6-8 hours one way, offering a challenging but rewarding ascent. However, with its 156 twists and turns, driving remains the most common and convenient route to the summit for most visitors.
If driving isn’t your thing, or you’re anxious about taking on the roads yourself, tour operators offer commercial Jeep tours of Pikes Peak.
Alternatively, When conditions are right, take an exciting bike tour down Pikes Peak for an unforgettable adventure.
Pro Tip: The altitude and temperature at the top of Pikes Peak are significantly different from where you begin. Hydrate, bring water, and layers of clothing are advised.
2. Savor Local Craft Beer and Cocktails
Colorado Springs is a craft beverage enthusiast’s paradise, which boasts more than 20 breweries.
You can try a Colorado Springs brewery tour to explore the dynamic microbrewery culture at three craft breweries. This tour features beer flights with food pairings, and includes up to 10 samples of beers.

A must-visit location for craft beverages is Ivywild School, a former elementary school transformed into a lively community hub. While you’re there, take a moment to enjoy a cocktail on the patio from the Principal’s Office or savor a microbrew from Bristol Brewery.
In downtown Colorado Springs, sample the diverse flavors of local brews at Phantom Canyon Brewing Company, where they offer a selection of 10-12 beers that carry a blend of German and English inspiration.
3. Discover the Garden of the Gods
The enormous red rock formations of the Garden of The Gods are awe-inspiring indeed, and ranked among Colorado Springs top things to see.
The best part? Garden of the Gods is One of Colorado Springs’s top free venture activities.
Without spending a dime on admission, you can snap a fun photo as if you’re “hoisting” the Balanced Rock, stroll along the paved path between massive red sandstone formations, or enjoy a scenic hike.
While visiting Garden of the Gods is one of the many enjoyable activities for adults in Colorado Springs at no cost, you might want to allocate part of your budget to enrich your experience.
For example, you could rent an e-bike to explore the trails or take a guided Segway tour for a more leisurely way to cover the ground.
Another option is to embark on a Jeep tour through the natural landscapes of Colorado Springs. With a lively cowboy as your driver and guide, you’ll also visit Helen Hunt Falls and other popular spots, including remote areas that are tougher to access due to the rugged terrain.
Beyond sightseeing, hiking, and biking, Garden of the Gods also offers opportunities for horseback riding and rock climbing, giving you even more ways to connect with nature.
4. Savor Local Flavors
Looking for great places to dine in Colorado Springs? You’ll find a variety of tasty meals, easy takeout options, and outdoor seating on charming patios.
At the Wild Goose Meeting House, enjoy a light and refreshing lunch while soaking up the Colorado sunshine on their patio. Pair your meal with locally brewed coffee, a Colorado craft beer, or a glass of wine for a laid-back experience.

Makes you appreciate nature on a whole new level. Anyone thinking of going should totally pack some warm clothes though, it gets chilly.
I find Colorado Springs to be a place of profound reflection, particularly at the Garden of the Gods.
