Where to Stay in Glacier National Park: 18 Best Places for Your Visit

Looking for the best accommodations near Glacier National Park so, you have quick access to all the sights?

Because my family raised me in the Flathead Valley on Glacier’s doorstep, I get a lot of questions about what are the top places to stay here. With more people visiting and moving in, the range of options has increased astronomically providing something for every budget.

However, remember that reservations fill up quickly – especially the closer to the park you are. The reservation system at Glacier is what further complicates things – your best bet if you’re looking to enter the park before 6am, without a reservation, is camping close by.

Here are some of the lodging options I’ve recommended to clients for their custom national park trips and a few from my own visits that you can read about firsthand. The prices can range heavily so it is a great idea to research places that compromise on convenience, proximity from the park and your wallet.

Quick Guide: Top areas to stay near Glacier National Park while still accessing activities around the Flathead Valley.

1. Belton Chalet

12575 US-2, West Glacier

Located 2 minutes from Glacier National Park at the west entrance, Belton Chalet is an ideal starting point for exploring this breathtaking national park. A historic property with a storied past (it was originally constructed to serve tourists on the Great Northern Railroad), it’s oozing in heritage.

With nostalgic charm, the rooms are a throwback to this golden age of railroad travel. Finally, enjoy peaceful and delicious meal at the in-house restaurant that offers fine dining for a great way to end your day. Just outside the west entrance of Glacier, is The Great Northern Resort which offers a great experience for families looking to stay right on the edge.

2. Great Northern Resort

12127 US-2, West Glacier

Great Northern Resort is my go to for laid back accommodations on a budget. Only a 10 minute drive to Glacier National Park, so it’s not as long of the early mornings. The resort has a very Montana feel to it, with cabin style rooms that give off a warm and homey rustic vibe.

As basic as the features may be compared to luxury resorts, this is also a great spot for families looking for somewhere nearby all you need, but without needing so much financial input. The resort also has a dining facility on-site, so you walk into the park for an entire day of excitement properly fed.

3. Beargrass Lodging and RV Resort

8688 Hwy 2 E, Hungry Horse

Traveling with an RV? If you’re driving — or willing to make one last drive around the loop as your roadtrip winds down before turning back at the entrance and leaving slowly, very slowly— a more affordable option such as Beargrass Lodging and RV Park may be right for you. But if you’re not one to take an RV on the road, there are also cabins available within in campground as far more tradition stay. Although the facilities are more basic than other options you’ll find, there is everything a self respecting naturist would expect; clean showers (if used respectfully), gray water disposal points and even laundry facilities.

This resort is ideal for those who like to travel fast and are looking a place that offers more function than style but without shopping sprees, this makes it perfect as base camp when you exploring the park nearby. It is not the best but it has great options for those who are looking to stay for less and without sacrificing too much comfort.

4. Under Canvas Glacier

101 Under Canvas Road, Coram

However, I slept at Under Canvas Glacier a few years ago, and was shocked by how peaceful it felt despite being minutes from West Glacier. The tents also come with beds that have obviously great thought and design put into their creation, making the stay a mix of luxury living & adventure. There are teepees and volleyball courts scattered along the property too, making it ideal for families or any teen eager to take a liking like-worthy photo.

Under Canvas does a good job of blending the rustic and luxurious, so it’s another option to consider if you want to “be one with nature” but not too much.

5. Glacier Guides Lodge

20 Highline Blvd, West Glacier

On the simpler end of things is Glacier Guides Lodge, serving as bare-bones accommodation for adventurers preparing to embark on one of its many outdoor tours. The lodge: Ideally situated in West Glacier, you can walk from a unique Montana cabin to your raft or the park’s many wonderful trails.

It offers a clean room with basic amenities to sleep on. Fine for convenience, and not flair. I always recommend this location to travellers who wish to stay near the park and enjoy a quiet terrace with views, especially after a day of wandering.

Hotels in Kalispell, Montana

Hotels of all varieties fit into the category; so it is no surprise that Kalispell has become flooded with them over last few years. Comfort and distance to Glacier National Park — 40 minutes drive as you are for choosing bush camping. These are my ways to make the best of a trip to Montana.

6. Red Lion Inn

20 N Main St #150

A chain in the heart of downtown Kalispell is a little meh until you walk into this place and see just how fashionable its mountain lodge decor has become. With spacious and clean rooms, it is a good option to choose as s traveler.

Others looking to explore outside of Glacier — perhaps driving up to Lone Pine State Park or venturing further into Flathead Valley attractions, Kilmer says this hotel provides a bit more flexibility than if you were to stay closer in the park. As a home base, it is great if you want to be closer to nature but with the infrastructure of nearby town.

7. Homewood Suites by Hilton

195 Hutton Ranch Rd

Just a little further from Glacier National Park than other properties on this list, Homewood Suites by Hilton is an affordable option that offers easy access to Flathead Lake and Bigfork. A great choice for families that are after larger rooms and, aside from the usual gymnasium, pool and 24 hour reception features you would expect of a mid-range property.

This is a good pick even if you want to stay comfortable and in touch with some sights;

8. Kalispell Grand Hotel

100 S Main St

The Kalispell Grand Hotel also stands out for those looking to be in the heart of downtown while they take day trips into Glacier National Park and explore the rest of Flathead Valley. This historic tri-level mansion with Victorian styled rooms that are now tastefully upgraded to combine original charm with contemporary comforts.

And actually this hotel is where we decided to stay on our wedding night, so that definitely made it even more sentimental for us. It is a great choice for the traveler (well, everyone) who appreciates both charm and service.

Hotels in Whitefish, Montana

Whitefish hotels tend to offer a more upscale experience compared to other options near Glacier National Park. If you’re working with a more modest budget, you may need to look for accommodations in nearby towns. However, if you’re in the mood to splurge, Whitefish has some luxurious spots often favored by celebrities. (The nearby resorts are truly impressive!)

There are some convenient restaurants and cafés nearby, however we do recommend trying the on-site dining for a special meal.

10. The Firebrand Hotel

650 E 3rd St

Built just a few years ago, Firebrand Hotel is one of Whitefish’s newest hotels (and roomiest), right in the center of charming downtown. For those coming in the summer and winter skiers, this modern option hits both. A cozy lobby provides a fireplace to welcome residents. The property’s on-site restaurant offers tasty lunch and dinnertime fillings, so you don’t have to go far for something good. Hotels in Columbia Falls, Montana

Staying in Columbia Falls is a great way to find affordable accommodations near Glacier National Park. While it may not be as upscale as Whitefish, Columbia Falls offers excellent budget-friendly motels, and its proximity makes it the closest town to the park. If you’re searching for a convenient and affordable base for your Glacier visit, Columbia Falls is an excellent choice.

13. Cedar Creek Lodge

930 2nd Ave W

Cedar Creek Lodge is a smart choice for visitors who want to bring the drive time down, without dealing with a correspondingly higher tariff of staying within the traditional park borders. Apart from its neighborhood, the lodge has facilities including a workout room, pool as well in house things to do like laundry. There is even a snow bus for winter activities to bring intrepid guests up to Whitefish Mountain Resort if they want in the area.

14. Montana Treehouse Retreat

2215 Dillon Rd

If you prefer snapping Instagram photos, then the Montana Treehouse Retreat is a dreamland so head to it. Though it poses incredibly well and serves as a gateway to Columbia Falls, Whitefish, and Glacier National Park with its distinct design helping for some great photo opportunities. Up in the mountains and away from it all (but near a charming town if you want to get out), but also offering everything so many of us yearn for when we go on vacation — no wonder this retreat is extremely popular, with people booking their stay at least one year ahead.

Hotels in Bigfork, Montana

Much like Whitefish, Bigfork offers a more upscale experience with its excellent restaurants and prime location along Flathead Lake. While there are luxury options, you’ll also find some budget-friendly places to stay. If you’re looking to explore more of Montana beyond Glacier National Park, Bigfork hotels provide a great alternative.

15. Swan River Inn

360 Grand Dr

Want to mix things up a bit? Swan River Inn is located in downtown Bigfork and walking distance to wonderful restaurants, shops. This inn is memorable for its unique themed accommodations, a departure from some of the more conventional options in town. That being said, not everyone is going to love this unusual charm so if you want something more conventional there are some other suggestions also.

16. Flathead Lake Resort

14871 Montana 35

One recently arrived is the Flathead Lake Resort, a newer kid on the block and immediately conjouring up warm community feels. Built from spread-out bungalow style units, the hotel is directly on a beach and ideal for chilling out post great hike in Glacier National Park. While it may be a bit farther from the park than choices in Columbia Falls or near the entrance, its peaceful and secluded environment more than makes up for any distance. Campers can take advantage of RV hookups and tent sites for a more outdoor experience.
