Puerto Río Tranquilo rests along the edge of Lake General Carrera, the second-largest lake in South America. A brief boat ride across glacial blue water leads to the famous Capillas de Mármol—the Marble Caves—one of Chile’s most remarkable natural sights.
Carved by thousands of years of waves, the caves glow in shifting shades of white, gray, and electric turquoise. Sunlight reflects off the lake and dances across the stone, creating patterns that change by the hour. On calm days, the water turns glassy and mirrors the curved rock walls. 19. Isla Magdalena: Gateway to Patagonia’s Penguins and Beyond
Welcome to Punta Arenas, the largest city in southern Chile. While you’re here, don’t miss a visit to Isla Magdalena, just a short ferry ride away. This small island is home to over 50,000 penguins, and boats are available daily, operating under strict conservation guidelines that allow short visits to this remarkable wildlife haven.
Exploring Punta Arenas
Before heading to Isla Magdalena, take some time to explore Punta Arenas itself. Stroll through the city and stop by the statue of Ferdinand Magellan in the main square, where it’s customary for both locals and travelers to rub the foot for good luck. From here, you can easily continue your journey to Ushuaia. If you have extra time, this city can also serve as your gateway to the southernmost point in Argentina, providing an excellent opportunity for further exploration.

Punta Arenas offers a variety of smaller hotels and guesthouses, providing good value for money. I’ve used the city as a base multiple times and can recommend several comfortable places to stay:
- Hostal Boutique Puerta Roja (my choice) – Modern, budget-friendly, and clean private rooms, with breakfast included, making it the best deal.
- Hostal Buenavista Patagonia – Great value for money, offering nice rooms and a good breakfast.
- Apart Hotel Endurance – Modern, furnished apartments with kitchenettes, plus breakfast included.
- Apart Hotel Quillango – Spacious, comfortable apartments in a prime location, with friendly service and breakfast included.
- Hotel Ilaia – A lovely small hotel with a cozy atmosphere and an excellent breakfast to start your day.
20. Exploring the Southernmost Reaches of Chile: Isla Navarino and the Dientes de Navarino Trek
From Punta Arenas, you can venture farther south to one of the most remote and adventurous destinations in Chile. A 32-hour ferry ride will take you to Isla Navarino, or you can opt for a shorter flight. Once on the island, the Dientes de Navarino trek awaits—a 4 to 5-day circular route that I had the pleasure of completing on my last Patagonia adventure.
This trek is physically demanding and is best suited for experienced hikers. You’ll need to be well-prepared, carrying equipment like a GPS and reliable camping gear. But for those ready for the challenge, the landscapes and experiences along the way are truly unforgettable.
Accommodation in Isla Navarino
Even at the far southern tip of the world, there are a few decent places to stay. However, availability is very limited, so it’s crucial to book in advance. I recommend El Padrino and Hotel Fio Fio, both offering great service. If you’re looking for something extra special, consider staying at Errante Ecolodge:
- Refugio El Padrino (Hostel & Camping) – A simple hostel with dorm rooms and an adjacent campground, shared kitchen, friendly host, and great atmosphere. It’s very budget-friendly.
- Hotel Forjadores – A cozy, family-run hotel with welcoming hosts, an excellent breakfast, and a central location. Transfers to the airport or ferry are available upon request.
- Hotel Fio Fio – Modern facilities with a cozy, comfortable setting. Great value for money, with a good breakfast included and helpful hosts.
- Errante Ecolodge – An ecolodge in a stunning location with modern and cozy interiors. The fantastic breakfast and unique panoramic views make it a standout choice. Shuttle service and an on-site restaurant add to the experience.
21. Casablanca Wine Region: A Must-See for Wine Lovers in Chile
The Casablanca wine region is one of Chile’s most renowned and significant. Located just 45 minutes from Santiago and 20 minutes from Valparaíso, it offers a perfect escape into the country’s rich winemaking heritage. The cool climate and varied soils, influenced by both the mountains and rivers, make it an ideal environment for producing exceptional wines. In particular, Casablanca Valley is well-known for its outstanding Sauvignon Blanc and Chardonnay.
A Wine Tour to Remember
For those visiting, a small-group wine tour from Santiago is a fantastic way to explore the area. This 9-hour tour stands out for its excellent reputation, offering visits to three local wineries. You’ll get a behind-the-scenes look at one winery’s underground cellar, where you can sample 14 different wines, each showcasing the region’s unique flavors and craftsmanship.
