Below, we’ve compiled a list of our favorite beach spots that promise the perfect mix of relaxation and family-friendly adventures. We hope our experiences inspire your next family beach vacation!

    1. Vieques, Puerto Rico

    Region: Caribbean

Our family’s trip to Vieques, Puerto Rico, remains one of the most unforgettable beach vacations we’ve ever had. The entire week we spent there felt like stepping into a dream, and it easily tops our list of family-friendly beach destinations.

Vieques is a perfect place for a family beach vacation because it offers a diverse array of beaches, each with its own charm. We spent our days driving around the island in a rental 4×4, exploring its quiet, often deserted shores. The presence of wild horses only added to the magic of the experience, making each beach trip feel like a new adventure.

But the magic of Vieques doesn’t stop at its beaches. It’s also home to the brightest bioluminescent bay on the planet. The waters in Vieques glow with an incredible blue light when disturbed, and there’s no better way to experience it than kayaking through the bioluminescent bay in a glass-bottom kayak. It’s an experience that stays with you long after the trip ends.

    2. Crete, Greece

    Regions: Europe, Mediterranean

After our daughter started studying ancient Athens in school, we knew a trip to Greece was in order! While our time in Athens was filled with incredible history and culture, we couldn’t wait to reach the Greek Islands for some much-needed beach relaxation. Crete was our first stop, and it quickly became one of our top family beach destinations.

Crete is home to some of the best beaches we’ve ever visited. Elafonisi Beach, named the best beach in the world for 2025 by Tripadvisor, is an absolute gem. The beach’s massive, shallow, crystal-clear waters create the ideal environment for kids to safely splash around, making it a perfect family getaway. The calm, bathtub-like waters and beautiful scenery make it hard to leave.

Another beach that caught our attention was Balos Beach, which Tripadvisor named the best beach of all time based on years of reviews. Getting there by boat or ATV is an adventure in itself, and once you arrive, the views from above are nothing short of breathtaking. Balos Beach might just offer the most stunning beach scenery we’ve encountered.

For a more traditional family beach day, we also visited Falassarna Beach. With its wide stretch of soft sand, inviting turquoise waters, and small sheltered coves, it was the perfect spot for our kids to play and for us to unwind. Each of Crete’s beaches provided a different experience, but all were unforgettable in their own right.

    3. Manuel Antonio National Park, Costa Rica

    Region: Central America

Costa Rica stands out as one of the top family-friendly beach destinations globally, and Manuel Antonio National Park is a shining highlight. When we planned our family vacation to Costa Rica over Christmas, we knew we wanted a special place for Christmas Day. After careful consideration, we chose Manuel Antonio National Park, and it certainly didn’t disappoint.

The beaches here are unlike any other. What makes the beaches at Manuel Antonio particularly striking are the two C-shaped beaches located back-to-back, forming a curve that creates an X shape when viewed from above. This unique layout, combined with the stunning natural beauty of the area, makes it a must-visit destination for beach lovers.

Surrounded by lush jungle and palm trees, these beaches are tropical havens. The chance of spotting wildlife is incredibly high, making it one of the most thrilling beach locations for families to enjoy. Whether you’re lounging by the water or taking a dip, you’re likely to spot a variety of tropical creatures nearby.

But the adventure doesn’t end at the beach. Manuel Antonio National Park offers much more for families than just its beaches. As one of the best spots in Costa Rica to see wildlife, we spent Christmas morning on a private tour of the park. The morning was filled with exciting sightings, including monkeys, sloths, and more. After the wildlife tour, we spent the rest of Christmas Day enjoying what might be the best family beach experience we’ve ever had.

    4. Playa del Carmen: A Hidden Gem for Family Beach Vacations

    Region: Caribbean

We spent a month in Playa del Carmen with our kids when they were just 2 and 4 years old, and it turned out to be a magical experience. While many people flock to Cancun for beach vacations in Mexico, we found it to be a bit one-dimensional, with not much to offer beyond the beach itself. Playa del Carmen, however, has so much more to explore.

What makes Playa del Carmen stand out for families is its central location within the Yucatan Peninsula. With a rental car, we had the freedom to explore the area and enjoy not only some of the best beaches around but also a rich mix of cultural attractions. One highlight was visiting Chichén Itzá, one of the New Seven Wonders of the World. The blend of natural beauty and historical significance makes Playa del Carmen a top choice for families.

While there are many family-friendly beaches in and around Playa del Carmen, our favorite was Xpu-ha. Just a short drive outside of the city, Xpu-Ha Beach offered the perfect combination of calm waters, soft sand, and plenty of space. It wasn’t crowded, even during the busy Christmas season, which made it ideal for our young kids. With its beauty and serenity, Xpu-ha gave even Manuel Antonio a run for its money as one of the best family beaches in the world.

    5. Ao Nang, Thailand: A Family-Friendly Beach Escape

    Region: Southeast Asia

It’s no surprise that Thailand makes it to the top of our list of family beach destinations. Having visited the country with our kids twice, we’ve spent time in Ao Nang both times and continue to be drawn to it. The region boasts a variety of incredible sandy beaches, many of which offer a sense of adventure on the way there.

While Railay Beach is the most popular in the Ao Nang area, we think it doesn’t offer the same experience as other nearby beaches. Our favorite is Pai Plong Beach, just a 20-minute walk from Railay. The walk is an adventure in itself, passing under towering limestone karsts, and offering a good chance to spot monkeys and monitor lizards along the way.

At Pai Plong Beach, kids can explore a beachside cave or enjoy watching rock climbers scale the limestone cliffs. After the excitement of the day, it’s time to relax on one of the most breathtaking beaches we’ve ever seen. The soft sand and crystal-clear, warm water make it a perfect spot for family fun. Offshore, a limestone karst rises dramatically out of the water, and you can walk along a shallow sandbar to visit the island.

What sets Pai Plong apart is the absence of motorized water sports and longtail boats. This makes it a peaceful retreat where you can unwind, making it one of the most exceptional beach spots in Thailand for families.

    6. Rodadero, Colombia: A Hidden Gem for Family Beach Escapes

    Regions: Caribbean, South America

If you’re looking for an off-the-beaten-path family beach vacation, Rodadero, Colombia is a destination worth considering. Located on the Caribbean coast, this up-and-coming beach resort offers a blend of stunning beaches and exciting family adventures.

Our first trip to Rodadero was part of our journey to acclimatize to Colombia before embarking on the multi-day hike to the Lost City. During this visit, we got our first taste of the beautiful sandy beaches that make this small Colombian beach town so special.

After our successful trek to the Lost City, we returned to Rodadero, this time as a base for exploring the incredible Tayrona National Park. There are plenty of easy day tours from Rodadero to Tayrona, many of which include a leisurely jungle walk to some of the most beautiful beaches we’ve ever seen. We love visiting places where the journey to the beach itself becomes an adventure—this added element makes the destination feel even more rewarding.

    7. Tofino, Canada: A Hidden Family Beach Retreat

    Region: North America

Wait, what? One of our top family beach destinations is in Canada? Absolutely! While Tofino might not have the tropical climate you’d expect from a classic beach vacation, it’s undeniably one of the most beautiful and magical beach spots for families.

Located on Vancouver Island, Tofino serves as the gateway to the Pacific Rim National Park. This park is home to some of the most stunning rainforests we’ve ever explored. Our family hikes through these lush, wild forests are some of our favorite travel memories. There’s something incredibly special about experiencing nature up close in this untouched landscape.

Tofino’s beaches are just as captivating as its rainforests. While you won’t find palm trees swaying in the breeze, the beaches here offer something equally wonderful. Whether it’s playing in the sand or splashing in the water, these beaches are perfect for a traditional beach day. But what really sets them apart is the opportunity for family walks, beachcombing, and exploring the coastal environment—there’s always something new to discover along the shore.

Beyond the beaches and hiking trails, Tofino also offers some amazing activities for families. We loved our whale watching tour, but the highlight of our trip was the bear watching boat cruise. The local bears, skilled at finding food along the shoreline at low tide, are easy to spot from the safety of a boat. Watching them feed in their natural habitat was an unforgettable experience that made Tofino a truly remarkable destination for our family.

    8. Big Island, Hawaiʻi: A Family Adventure with Beach Days and More

    Region: United States (Hawaiian Islands)

The Big Island of Hawaiʻi was full of surprises, both in the best ways and in a few unexpected ones. We had imagined that finding soft, sandy beaches for our kids to play on would be a breeze, but the island’s rugged volcanic coastline challenged us to seek out the ideal family-friendly beaches.

Once we figured out where to look, however, we were rewarded with some incredible spots. Whether it was boogie boarding at Hāpuna Beach or watching sea turtles at ʻAnaehoʻomalu Bay, we found beaches that offered safe play for the kids and allowed us to unwind as well.

What makes the Big Island so appealing is its diversity. One side of the island is dry and filled with resorts, while the other side is lush and home to local culture. This mix ensures that no matter what kind of beach experience you’re after, there’s something perfect for every family. If you’re looking to blend relaxing beach days with a bit of adventure, the Big Island is definitely worth exploring.

    9. Jeju Island, South Korea: A Family-Friendly Getaway

Jeju Island, South Korea: A Family-Friendly Getaway

    Region: Asia

Out of all the family beach vacations we’ve had around the world, Jeju Island in South Korea remains the one that got away. Known for its beautiful beaches and a wide range of activities for kids, Jeju Island stands out as the premier vacation spot in South Korea.

Unfortunately, our timing was off—we visited Jeju Island early in the year, and the weather wasn’t quite warm enough for a true beach experience. Nevertheless, it was easy to see the island’s potential. The beaches were stunning, and we could already tell that the island would be an amazing family destination once the temperatures warmed up.

Beyond the beaches, Jeju Island offers plenty of exciting non-beach activities. One of the most memorable was walking through the Manjanggul Lava Tubes. This volcanic adventure was a one-of-a-kind experience that the whole family enjoyed. Another highlight was hiking around the volcanic summit of Hallasan Mountain—definitely a trip to remember.

Clearly, Jeju Island is on our list for a return visit. We’re excited to come back and enjoy the full experience, especially the family-friendly beach fun we missed the first time!

    10. Isla d’Elba, Italy: A Family Beach Adventure

    Regions: Europe, Mediterranean

We had the pleasure of spending a week on Isla d’Elba, Italy, when our kids were 2 and 4 years old. It was an ideal family vacation destination, where we based ourselves in Portoferraio and rented bikes with child seats. This gave us the freedom to explore the island’s stunning beaches at our own pace.

Since Isla d’Elba is located in the Mediterranean, most of its beaches are made of pebbles rather than sand. At first, we were unsure how the kids would handle this, but to our surprise, they had just as much fun on a pebble beach as they would have on a sandy one. In fact, when we stumbled upon a sand beach, we thought they would be thrilled—but instead, they found more joy in playing with the pebbles, which became one of their favorite activities.

While most of our time was spent by the water, Isla d’Elba also offers some fascinating cultural experiences. For history enthusiasts, Elba is significant as the island where Napoleon spent his days in exile. It was something almost everyone on the island seemed to know—except for us! This added an interesting layer to our otherwise relaxing beach getaway.

    11. Phuket, Thailand: A Family-Friendly Beach Paradise

    Region: Southeast Asia

Phuket is a well-known favorite when it comes to family beach vacations, and it’s no surprise that it made our list. Renowned for its beautiful, family-friendly beaches, we spent an unforgettable Christmas week there during our first family trip to Thailand.

As you may have noticed from other destinations on our list, we typically seek out beach spots that offer a range of activities for kids beyond just the beach itself. Phuket certainly delivers on this front, offering a wide variety of family-friendly options, such as water parks, animal sanctuaries, and more.

However, in a rare twist, the sheer beauty of Phuket’s beaches captivated us so much that we ended up spending most of our time just soaking in the sun, sand, and sea. Sometimes, the beach itself is all you need for the perfect family vacation.

    12. Guanacaste, Costa Rica: A Family Beach Haven

    Region: Central America

While recent additions like Crete and the Big Island of Hawaii pushed Guanacaste, Costa Rica, out of our top 10 family beach destinations, it remains an exceptional spot for a family vacation. Located on the Pacific Coast in the northwest corner of Costa Rica, the Guanacaste Peninsula is famous for its beautiful beaches and is considered one of the country’s top beach destinations.

What drew us to this region were the numerous family-friendly resorts, with the Riu Guanacaste All-inclusive resort being our first stop on our recent Costa Rica trip. This resort is a standout, and we had an unforgettable experience during our stay.

The Riu Guanacaste resort offers an amazing setting—sitting right on a long, golden-sand beach and backed by lush jungle. We spent most of our time lounging on the beach, where a fresh water stream flowed from the jungle, through the sand, and into the ocean. Our kids enjoyed splashing in both the ocean and the stream, while we relaxed, often listening to the calls of howler monkeys in the distance. The combination of beach and jungle made it a truly special experience.

    13. Hvar, Croatia: A Family Beach Destination with a Twist

    Region: Europe

Croatia is renowned for its stunning beaches, and while planning our family trip, we weren’t entirely sure about Hvar. Known for its beautiful shores, it also has a reputation as a party hotspot. However, we decided to give it a chance, and we’re so glad we did!

If you’ve followed our family travel blog before, you’ll know we’re all about outdoor adventures. So, it won’t surprise you that we stumbled upon an incredible hike to one of Hvar’s most beautiful beaches.

The hike from Hvar to Milna Beach was one of the most scenic trails we’ve ever experienced. The path hugs the rugged Adriatic coastline, and along the way, we discovered several ‘secret’ beaches that were even more peaceful and charming than the popular Milna Beach itself. We picked one of these hidden spots and spent a relaxing day enjoying the beach in near solitude.

In addition to beach time, we also explored the Hvar Fortress, which turned out to be a great experience for the whole family. Overlooking the beach resort, the fortress sparked the imagination of our kids—young and old alike. It was the perfect combination of history and adventure for a family day out.

    14. Koh Lanta, Thailand: A Relaxing Beach Getaway for Families

    Region: Southeast Asia

We spent our first Christmas in Thailand soaking up the sun on the sandy beaches of Phuket. For our second family vacation in the country, we sought a more relaxed beach destination further down the coast. That’s when we discovered the charm of Koh Lanta.

We stayed at a beach resort on Khlong Dao Beach, which turned out to be the perfect spot for our family. The kids enjoyed the soft sand and calm waters, and we took full advantage of the peaceful setting with daily walks along the beach, making memories as a family.

Having already visited an elephant sanctuary in Chiang Mai, we decided to revisit the experience with our kids five years later. While both experiences were incredible, our time at the Lanta elephant sanctuary was particularly special and perhaps even more enjoyable than our first visit.

But what really stood out for our kids during our time on Koh Lanta was the fire shows on the beach. Many hotels organize these exciting performances a few times a week, and we let the kids stay up for a New Year’s Eve show. It was a thrilling experience, and we all agreed—watching the fire dancers light up the night was definitely one of the highlights of our trip!

    15. Cabo San Lucas, Mexico: A Perfect Family Beach Escape

Cabo San Lucas, Mexico: A Perfect Family Beach Escape
Cabo San Lucas, Mexico | Gary J. Wood/Flickr

    Region: Mexico

We kicked off our post-Covid family travel with a week at the Riu Palace Cabo San Lucas all-inclusive resort. Given the challenges of traveling with kids during this uncertain time, we did something we typically never do—we stayed put at the resort for the entire trip.

To be honest, there was no need to leave. The resort was so amazing that we were perfectly content spending all our time there. The beach was beautiful, and we enjoyed daily walks to a hidden spot at the far end of the shore. During many of these walks, we were treated to the incredible sight of humpback whales breaching just offshore. That memory will stick with us for years.

Although the ocean on the Pacific coast was a bit rough during our stay, the resort’s swimming pools more than made up for it. The kids had a blast splashing around, which kept them entertained for hours.

We loved this all-inclusive resort so much that we returned for a second stay in 2025. Despite my plan to leave the resort and explore Cabo San Lucas, we ended up enjoying the resort so much that we didn’t venture out. Maybe on our third trip, I’ll finally get to see more of the area!

    16. La Palma, Canary Islands, Spain: A Family-Friendly Paradise

La Palma, Canary Islands, Spain: A Family-Friendly Paradise

    Region: Europe

While Tenerife often steals the spotlight as the most family-friendly island in the Canary Islands, we found La Palma to be a better fit for our family. One of the key reasons is that the entire island of La Palma is designated as a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve, making it an enchanting outdoor haven for all ages.

La Palma is home to stunning black sand beaches, which were a hit with our kids. Unlike other destinations that boast black sand, the beaches here have deep, true black sand that offers a distinct and exciting experience. Watching our kids build black sand castles was a memorable highlight of our trip.

In addition to its beaches, La Palma offers several incredible natural swimming pools. These pools, located next to the ocean, use saltwater, providing a calm swimming experience free from the usual ocean waves. Many of these pools are beautifully crafted, blending seamlessly with the island’s natural landscape.

For a break from the beach, La Palma also offers remarkable hiking opportunities. We spent a week on the island with our kids, exploring a variety of family-friendly hikes through volcanic landscapes and lush national parks. The combination of beach time and hiking made our trip unforgettable. If your family enjoys connecting with nature, a beach vacation in La Palma is sure to impress.

    17. Wilmington, North Carolina: A Hidden Gem for Families

    Region: East Coast USA

During a family road trip along the southern East Coast, we stumbled upon Wilmington, NC. To be honest, we didn’t know much about the city except that it was a convenient stop between Charleston, NC, and Shenandoah National Park.

We’re so glad we decided to explore Wilmington—it turned out to be an incredible find and quickly became one of our favorite cities to visit with kids! Beyond its beautiful beaches, Wilmington is home to the only native growing area for Venus flytraps in the world. Who knew? What kid wouldn’t be thrilled to see these fascinating plants in their natural habitat?

We spent a wonderful afternoon at the Fort Fisher Recreational Area beach, which offered a perfect family beach day. We also joined a family-friendly eco-tour to Masonboro Island, where we had a great time on a secluded sandy beach. Wilmington surprised us in the best way, combining nature, fun activities, and memorable family moments.

    18. Tenerife, Canary Islands, Spain: A Perfect Beach Destination for Families

    Region: Europe

Tenerife is widely recognized as a family-friendly beach destination in the Canary Islands, largely thanks to the theme parks in Costa Adeje. However, we spent an entire week exploring Tenerife’s natural beauty with our kids and never stepped foot in a theme park. Tenerife’s stunning beaches and scenic landscapes kept us more than busy, proving you don’t need theme parks to make for an unforgettable family vacation.

The island is home to some fantastic family-friendly beaches, and one of our favorites was Las Teresitas Beach. With its soft golden sand and gentle waves—thanks to an offshore wave break—it was the perfect place for our kids to play and splash around.

Beyond the beach, we had an incredible experience taking the Mount Teide cable car to Spain’s highest point. The panoramic views from this towering volcano were breathtaking, and our kids were fascinated by the thermal heat that our guide pointed out beneath the ground. We also found some amazing family-friendly hiking trails just a short drive from the cable car station.

One of the highlights of our trip was a dolphin-watching tour from a boat with underwater viewing areas. Watching the dolphins swim past beneath the water was an exciting and magical experience for our kids, and it made for a perfect family adventure.

    19. Split, Croatia: A Blend of Culture, History, and Beach Fun

Bačvice Beach, Split | Martin Wippel/Flickr

    Region: Europe

Split, Croatia, offers a perfect mix of culture, history, and natural beauty, making it an ideal spot for a family vacation. During our three-day stay with kids, we managed to enjoy a little bit of everything this vibrant city has to offer.

For a day at the beach, we were excited to visit Bacvice Beach, a rare find in the Mediterranean with actual sand (as opposed to the more typical pebbles). However, in a funny twist, our kids weren’t thrilled with the sand. They love throwing pebbles into the water, so we ended up heading to a nearby beach where they could continue their pebble-throwing fun!

Exploring Split’s old town was one of the highlights of our trip. The city’s historical significance is well-known, especially among Game of Thrones fans, as many key locations from the show were filmed here. While Celine and I enjoyed visiting these iconic spots, our kids had a blast wandering through the city’s side streets, where they found all kinds of little surprises to keep them entertained.

    20. Busan, South Korea: A Family Adventure with Beaches and Culture

    Region: Asia

During our trip to Busan, South Korea, we unfortunately missed out on enjoying the beautiful beaches due to chilly weather. It’s a shame, especially because the beaches here look stunning.

One of the standout spots is Haeundae Beach, popular with families for its soft sand and lively atmosphere, with shiny skyscrapers as a backdrop. We also spent some time at Songdo Beach, which features a striking humpback whale sculpture in the water. This beach seemed like it would be a perfect family destination in warmer weather.

Even though the temperatures kept us from hitting the beach, we were able to explore some of Busan’s best attractions for kids. A walk through the colorful Gamcheon Culture Village was a definite highlight, offering plenty of quirky art and hidden gems. Another unforgettable experience was our family hike around Beomeosa Temple, one of South Korea’s most significant temples. It was the perfect mix of culture and nature, making our trip to Busan truly memorable.

    21. Oaxaca Coast, Mexico: A Family Beach Vacation Along the Pacific

    Region: Mexico

We spent two weeks in the Oaxaca region of Mexico, with most of our family vacation focused on exploring the stunning Oaxaca coast. While we did spend a few days inland in the city of Oaxaca, the majority of our time was spent along the coast, where we had the chance to experience three different beach destinations.

Our trip began in the relaxed beach town of Mazunte. This area is home to a trio of old hippy beach towns, including Mazunte, San Agustinillo, and Zipolite. The laid-back atmosphere in these towns was exactly what we needed to start our vacation. Though they’re only now being more widely discovered, they still maintain a charming and peaceful vibe. We spent our time exploring the beaches near Mazunte, each offering something different and beautiful.

Next, we headed to Puerto Escondido, a city known for its massive surf waves, which, while exciting for experienced surfers, aren’t ideal for a family beach trip. Fortunately, Puerto Escondido also has some beautiful, sheltered beaches that are perfect for families to relax and enjoy. We had a wonderful time at these calmer spots, soaking in the natural beauty without worrying about strong waves.

Finally, we celebrated New Year’s Eve at the Barcelo Huatulco all-inclusive resort, which sits on the gorgeous Tangolunda Bay. Its beachfront location was perfect for ringing in the new year with the family. You can read more about our stay in our review of the Barcelo Huatulco all-inclusive resort, but suffice it to say, it was a memorable way to end our Oaxaca coast adventure.

Summary – Family Beach Vacation Ideas

And that’s a wrap! We hope you enjoyed reading about these fantastic beach destinations for families. We had an unforgettable time at each of these amazing spots, and we hope our experiences inspire you to plan your own family beach getaway. Whether you’re looking for relaxation, adventure, or a mix of both, these destinations offer something for everyone. Enjoy your travels!
