15 Cheapest and Safest Places to Travel: Affordable & Worry-Free

If you’re searching for affordable travel spots in 2025, I’ve got a few great picks for you!

In this list, I’ll focus only on destinations I’ve personally visited in my 12+ years as a full-time travel blogger. I believe in sharing honest insights based on my experiences to provide accurate recommendations. I’m not here to claim that places like Costa Rica or South Korea are budget-friendly—they aren’t!

What excites me about budget-friendly destinations is how they simplify travel decisions. It can be so freeing to realize how far your Dollars, Euros, or Pounds stretch in affordable countries. In many places, you can easily manage to spend around $35 to $50 a day on all your travel costs.

Imagine spending the same amount you’d typically pay for a meal in cities like London or New York, and instead, you could cover a full day of travel in countries like Indonesia, Vietnam, Mexico, or Morocco. Honestly, in the world’s cheapest countries to visit, it can feel like traveling costs even less than staying home.

Here are a few destinations to consider :

    1. Bulgaria

Bulgaria may not be a destination that immediately comes to mind, and it wasn’t on my radar either—until I visited. I quickly realized how much I had been missing!

It stands out as one of Europe’s best-kept travel bargains, with a rich blend of culture, history, and authenticity. Bulgaria’s potential as a major tourist destination is clear, but for now, it remains wonderfully underexplored, even during peak season. If you’re tired of the crowds in Western Europe in August, Bulgaria offers a refreshing escape to quieter, more relaxed settings.

For a deeper look at what Bulgaria has to offer, check out my cinematic travel vlog, where I take you on a tour of this hidden gem.

    2. Mexico

    Mexico

Following the US presidential elections and their impact on exchange rates, Mexico has once again become an affordable destination. Back in mid-2024, the exchange rate was around 16 Mexican pesos to 1 US dollar, but now it’s nearing 21.

For North Americans, Mexico is an obvious budget-friendly choice, but even Europeans can score reasonably priced flights. For example, flights from London, Madrid, or Frankfurt to Cancun can be as low as 550 EUR round-trip, making Mexico an attractive long-distance option.

Though popular beach resorts like Cancun, Cabo, and Tulum come with higher price tags, many other areas in Mexico remain quite affordable. There are plenty of safe, cost-effective places to explore, offering travelers options that suit a variety of budgets. Families especially appreciate Mexico, as it’s one of the cheapest destinations for a trip with kids while still offering beaches, culture, and adventure.

    Mid-range Budget: $65 a day
Highlights: Yucatan beaches, Mexico City’s lively atmosphere, Oaxaca’s food scene

    3. Vietnam

    Vietnam

Despite its rapid economic growth, Vietnam remains one of the most affordable countries in Asia. While it may not boast postcard-perfect beaches like The Philippines or Indonesia, it more than makes up for it with its incredible food, natural landscapes, and rich cultural heritage.

Vietnam is a great place to travel on a budget. Meals from local vendors can cost just a few dollars, and a glass of locally brewed beer may set you back only $0.25. Accommodation is also highly affordable, with decent hotel rooms available for as low as $14 per night. Whether you’re backpacking or just seeking a budget-friendly getaway, Vietnam is a fantastic choice.

For the full experience, consider straying from the typical tourist route and exploring some of the lesser-visited gems of the country. The northern province of Ha Giang offers a truly authentic experience, far from the crowds. The stunning limestone landscapes of Tam Coc are another must-see, as is Phong Nha—a top spot for adventure tourism and cave exploration. I’ll never forget camping in the world’s third-largest cave, an experience that defined my time in Vietnam.

    4. El Salvador

Isn’t El Salvador considered a dangerous, no-go zone?

    That’s a common misconception!

Thanks to a controversial but effective crackdown on gangs in 2022 and 2023, El Salvador’s crime rates have dropped significantly, making it much safer than it once was. In fact, crime has decreased by up to 20 times, bringing it in line with countries like the USA in terms of safety.

This has turned El Salvador into an emerging hotspot for budget travelers and backpackers eager to visit before it gains widespread attention.

The country offers much more than its past reputation suggests. With stunning surfer beaches, dramatic volcanoes, and charming colonial towns, El Salvador is packed with incredible sights and experiences. Plus, it boasts some of the lowest travel costs in Central America, making it a perfect destination for those on a budget.

    5. Albania

Albania has recently gained attention as one of Europe’s trending destinations, and its charm is undeniable. While it’s likely that prices will rise as more tourists flock to this Mediterranean gem, it still stands as one of the most affordable places to visit in Europe.

Although it may lack some of the development seen in other parts of the continent, Albania’s unspoiled coastline, quirky capital, preserved Ottoman towns, and towering Alps offer a refreshing contrast. The country’s history is equally fascinating—once isolated and known as Europe’s “North Korea” during the Cold War, Albania is now a developing democracy, with better infrastructure making it easier for travelers to explore.

Accommodation in Albania is extremely affordable, with hostel dorms available for as little as $10 and budget hotel rooms around $25. Albanian food is delicious, and a hearty lunch or dinner will only cost you around $2 to $4.

A highlight for nature lovers is the Vjosa Wild River National Park, established in 2024, which safeguards one of the last wild rivers in Europe. River rafting is the ultimate way to experience the park’s pristine beauty.

    6. Thailand

Thailand is a go-to destination for travelers seeking affordability and great experiences, with its islands and beaches being the main draws. While these coastal areas offer decent value, the real budget-friendly gems are found in the northern region of Chiang Mai.

Surrounded by rice fields, Buddhist temples, and hill tribes, Chiang Mai provides some of the best value for accommodation you’ll find. Whether you’re looking for a budget-friendly dorm bed (starting at just $6 a night) or a comfortable hotel with a pool (from $35), you’ll have plenty of options to choose from.

Thailand also offers a great variety of activities, from exploring ancient temples to indulging in some of the world’s best street food. It’s the ideal destination for both backpackers and those seeking a more relaxed stay.

Backpacker Budget: $30 a day (inland)
    Mid-range Budget: $50-$60 a day
Highlights: Gorgeous beaches, historic temples, amazing street food
Best Time to Visit: Peak season (Nov-Feb), Shoulder season (Apr-Jun, Oct)

    7. Indonesia

    Indonesia

Indonesia is an incredibly budget-friendly destination, especially for Western travelers, and I was reminded of this during my 2024 six-week trip, which I’ll be sharing more about soon.

While Bali remains a favorite, it’s becoming increasingly crowded with tourists. Fortunately, the Indonesian archipelago, which is larger than the United States, has much more to offer. Exploring outside Bali is a great way to save money and experience a different side of the country. Many travelers are surprised to find that Bali remains one of the cheapest tropical places to enjoy paradise without the luxury price tag.

Consider visiting nearby islands like Lombok and Java, the breathtaking Komodo Islands, or the more rural areas of Flores, Sumatra, West Nusa Tenggara, or Sulawesi. On my recent trip to Sulawesi, I found guesthouses or homestays with AC for around 10 EUR or 12 USD per night. Meals in local restaurants, like a stir fry, often cost only $2 to $2.50, making it easy to travel without breaking the bank.

From stunning white-sand beaches to dense jungles, and from volcanoes that spit blue flames to remote rainforests where you can see orangutans in the wild, Indonesia offers endless opportunities for budget-conscious adventurers.

    Backpacker Budget: $30 a day
    Mid-range Budget: $50 a day
Highlights: Bromo Volcano, Borobudur Temples, Bali, Lesser-Known Islands
Best Time to Visit: Peak season (Jun-Sep), Shoulder season (Mar-May, Oct-Nov)

    8. Transylvania

    Transylvania

Transylvania deserves its own mention, separate from Romania, as it’s often overlooked by travelers who don’t know what they’re missing.

This hidden gem in Eastern Europe is a place full of surprises. Transylvania, with its medieval towns, ancient fortified churches, and the stunning Carpathian Mountains, offers a wealth of history and beauty. Whether you visit in the spring or summer to enjoy its charm, or head there in winter for its affordable ski resorts and snow-covered castles, Transylvania has something to offer year-round.

Romania, and specifically Transylvania, is very budget-friendly. Backpackers can easily manage on about $30 to $40 a day. If you’re looking for a more relaxed stay, cozy bed-and-breakfasts start at around $30 per night.

    Backpacker Budget: $40 a day
    Mid-range Budget: $60 a day
Highlights: Medieval towns in Transylvania, safaris in the Carpathian Mountains
Best Time to Visit: Peak season (Jun-Aug), Shoulder season (Apr-May, Sep-Oct)

    9. Nicaragua

    Nicaragua

Think of Nicaragua as a budget-friendly alternative to Costa Rica. While Costa Rica has a more developed tourism scene, Nicaragua offers similar experiences at a fraction of the price.

Despite its smaller size, Nicaragua packs in a variety of experiences. From the laid-back surfer towns along the Pacific coast to the charming colonial cities of Granada and Leon, there’s no shortage of adventure. Explore lush jungles, hike active volcanoes, or visit Ometepe Island, a stunning volcanic island situated in a lake.

    Backpacker Budget: $30 a day
    Mid-range Budget: $40 a day
Highlights: Ometepe Island, surfing in San Juan del Sur, the Caribbean Corn Islands
Best Time to Visit: Peak season (Nov-May)

    10. Türkiye

    Türkiye
    Türkiye | Evan/Flickr

For a sun-soaked destination near Europe, Türkiye remains a strong choice. While the Turquoise Coast offers affordable beach stays, the country also attracts culture enthusiasts with its bustling city of Istanbul and the stunning rock formations of Cappadocia.

Sitting at the crossroads of East and West, Türkiye boasts a rich history as the former home of the Byzantine and Ottoman Empires. Expect to find ancient Roman ruins, cave cities, lively bazaars, and plenty of beautiful Mediterranean beaches.

Although Türkiye is no longer as budget-friendly as it once was due to recent currency fluctuations, it still remains relatively affordable by global standards. With prices rising in 2024, some travelers might find Greece to be a better value for money at the moment.

Tip: If you’re planning a stopover in Istanbul, Turkish Airlines offers free hotel accommodations during layovers, making it a great option for travelers.

    Backpacker Budget: $50 a day
    Mid-range Budget: $70 a day
Highlights: Balloon rides over Cappadocia, cultural experiences in Istanbul, beach resorts
Best Time to Visit: Peak season (May-Sep), Shoulder season (Apr, Oct)

    11. Cape Verde

Is it possible for an entire country to be considered a ‘hidden gem’? If it is, then Cape Verde would definitely earn that title!

This small archipelago off the coast of Africa is relatively unknown but truly stunning. If you’re after affordable resort vacations, the island of Sal has it all. For those seeking a mix of culture and nature, head to Mindelo and the breathtaking island of Santo Antao, where I experienced some of the best hikes of my life!

Cape Verde offers great value for money while being safe and reasonably developed, especially when compared to mainland West Africa. As a budget traveler, I spent about $45 per day, staying in B&Bs and enjoying local meals. For more reasons to visit, check out my article on 7 compelling reasons to explore Cape Verde.

    Backpacker Budget: $45 a day
    Mid-range Budget: $70 a day
Highlights: Hiking on Santo Antao, beach resorts on Sal

    12. Colombia

    Colombia

Colombia is an incredible destination to explore (and don’t worry, it’s far removed from the days depicted in Netflix’s Narcos, a show set over 50 years ago!).

This diverse country offers a wide range of experiences, from the Pacific and Atlantic coasts to the vast Amazon rainforest and the beginning of the Andes mountain range. Add the lively cities of Medellín and Bogotá, and the warmth of Colombians and their rich culture, and it becomes one of the most affordable travel spots in the Americas.

I revisited Colombia in 2022 and updated all my travel guides. If you’re planning a trip, be sure to check out my tips for a one-week beach and nature holiday, as well as recommended itineraries to make the most of your time there.

While Colombia has made great strides in safety, travelers should still stay informed, especially solo men, who should exercise caution in Medellín due to its “honey traps.” Though some areas are still best avoided, the welcoming north coast and coffee zone are among the highlights that many tourists rave about.

    Backpacker Budget: $30 a day
    Mid-range Budget: $50 a day
Highlights: Caribbean beaches, Tayrona National Park, Medellín
Best Time to Visit: Peak season (Dec-Mar), Shoulder season (Jul-Sep)

    13. Bosnia-Herzegovina

    Bosnia-Herzegovina

Many people still associate Bosnia-Herzegovina with the war that occurred nearly three decades ago, but this Balkan gem has moved beyond its troubled past and has much to offer to those who give it a chance.

Mostar, a medieval town, stands out with its iconic bridge, which once linked trade routes stretching from Venice to Constantinople. The capital, Sarajevo, surprised me with its warmth, unique architecture, and charming historic quarter. It’s an affordable destination and, in my opinion, one of the most underrated capitals in Europe.

    Backpacker Budget: $30 a day
    Mid-range Budget: $50 a day
    Highlights: Sarajevo and Mostar
Best Time to Visit: Peak season (Jul-Aug), Shoulder season (May-Jun, Sep)

    14. Cambodia

    Cambodia

Many travelers come to Cambodia primarily for Angkor Wat, the magnificent temple complex that once served as the heart of the ancient Khmer Empire. This sprawling archaeological site is undeniably impressive and should definitely be on your list.

However, Cambodia has far more to offer. From the peaceful town of Kratie along the Mekong River to the untouched jungles of the Cardamom Mountains and the relaxed island of Koh Rong Sanloem, there’s a wealth of experiences to enjoy. Additionally, Cambodia remains one of the most affordable destinations in Asia.

    Backpacker Budget: $25 a day
    Mid-range Budget: $45 a day
Highlights: Angkor Wat, Battambang, islands off the coast
Best Time to Visit: Peak season (Dec-Feb), Shoulder season (Apr-May, Nov)

    15. Laos

    Laos

Imagine Laos as Thailand, but without the overwhelming crowds. It’s sparsely populated, with mountainous terrain and nearly 70% of its land covered by forests, making it a prime destination for outdoor adventures like trekking, climbing, kayaking, zip-lining, and hot air ballooning—all available at affordable prices.

Thanks to improved infrastructure, Laos has become more accessible in recent years while maintaining its laid-back rural charm. Now is the perfect time to visit if you want to escape the throngs of tourists and experience a more authentic destination. Skip the Thai beaches and head to Laos for an unforgettable experience.

For something truly special, try sleeping in tree huts and zip-lining through the jungle at the famous Gibbon Experience, or explore the stunning waterfalls of the Bolaven Plateau.

    Backpacker Budget: $25 a day
    Mid-range Budget: $45 a day
Highlights: Luang Prabang, Mekong river journeys, the Gibbon Experience
Best Time to Visit: Peak season (Nov-Feb), Shoulder season (Oct, Mar-Apr)

P.P.S. The budgets mentioned here are general guidelines and can vary based on your travel style. They reflect the average daily cost per person, excluding one-time expenses like flights or travel insurance.

Backpacker Budget: This assumes you’ll opt for hostel dorms or shared rooms in affordable guesthouses. Meals will primarily be from local eateries, and transportation will be local. Expensive private tours are kept to a minimum.

Mid-range Budget: This suggests staying in comfortable B&Bs, guesthouses, or budget hotels. It includes regular day tours or organized activities, along with dining at nicer restaurants for at least one meal per day.
