6. Kota Kinabalu, Malaysia: An Unforgettable Adventure in Borneo
We visited Malaysian Borneo a couple of years ago, and it still ranks as one of our favorite travel experiences. With tropical islands just a short boat ride away from the coast and a rich natural environment full of wildlife like native orangutans and proboscis monkeys, Kota Kinabalu offers a captivating escape into nature. As you ascend, the roadsides are lined with stands selling one of our all-time favorite street foods – BBQ roasted boar, known as Sinalau Bakas. The combination of mountain views and mouthwatering flavors makes the drive an adventure in itself.

12. Dominican Republic: A Beautiful Destination Beyond the Headlines
For years, the Dominican Republic has been one of the most visited islands in the Caribbean. This year, a series of unrelated deaths sparked a sensationalized news story that impacted the country’s tourism industry. However, it’s important to look beyond the headlines and focus on the country’s true beauty. Despite the unfortunate incidents, there have been no major events in recent times, making it the perfect moment to consider the DR once again as a top travel destination.
While most tourists head straight to Punta Cana and stay within the resort areas, there’s so much more to explore. The island is home to dynamic cities filled with culture and history. My personal favorite is Santo Domingo, a historic city founded in the 1500s. Its architecture and feel are reminiscent of Rome, rather than the typical Caribbean vibe. 14. Marfa, Texas: The Unexpected Art Hub in the Desert
Marfa, Texas, may not be on everyone’s radar, but it’s one of the most fascinating and offbeat destinations in the U.S. Known as an art mecca in the middle of nowhere, this quirky town is home to iconic spots like the Prada Marfa art installation and the Instagram-famous El Cosmico Airstream and Teepee park. It’s not just the installations that draw visitors; Marfa is also home to world-renowned art galleries that put this small West Texas town on the map.
Despite its remote location, Marfa has no shortage of luxury. Think five-star hotels, trendy restaurants, specialty coffee shops, and curated fashion boutiques all tucked into a town that seems like it should be straight out of a dream. 15. Cape Town, South Africa: An Adventure That’s Hard to Beat
We absolutely loved Cape Town and are already planning our next trip to dive even deeper into everything this city has to offer. Cape Town has a bold energy that reminds me of LA but with its own flair. The city is packed with grand experiences—breathtaking beaches, the majestic Table Mountain, and coastal roads that offer some of the best scenic drives you can imagine. And, yes, there are penguins lounging on the beach, right within the city limits!
In just a few hours, you can drive from the city to explore the Winelands, where the villages look as if they were taken from the pages of a European travel book. Along the way, you’ll find coastal towns that resemble Norway more than Africa. If you’re craving an authentic wildlife experience, the nearby Big-5 Game Reserves offer unforgettable safari adventures. The cherry on top? Food and wine are incredibly affordable for travelers from the U.S. or Europe.

16. Bermuda: A Quick Escape to Paradise
Have you noticed something different about these photos? It’s been a while since we visited Bermuda, not since 2014 in fact, but lately, the island has been calling me back. I still remember how special it felt to be there. While Bermuda is often overshadowed by more popular Caribbean destinations, it holds its own charm, lying far to the North in the Atlantic Ocean. The best part? If you’re on the East Coast, getting there is a breeze—flights from NYC take less than 2 hours!
We visited on a quick weekend trip for my birthday when we both had office jobs. We left our hotel on Monday morning at 8 AM, caught a flight back to New York, and I was back in the office by noon. If you’re looking for an easy getaway, Bermuda’s pink sand beaches, the blue hole, and hidden grotto pools are perfect for a short but unforgettable trip. 17. Guadalajara, Mexico: A Cultural and Natural Haven
Guadalajara, Mexico’s second-largest city, often flies under the radar, but it has so much to offer. Rich in history, beauty, and culture, this city is surrounded by stunning natural landscapes and charming nearby towns. We visited during Dia De Los Muertos, which turned out to be an unforgettable cultural experience—one that I highly recommend to anyone interested in truly immersing themselves in Mexican traditions.
While you’re in Guadalajara, make sure to venture out to Tequila, the birthplace of the iconic drink, and take a guided tour to explore its history. Another must-see is Lake Chapala, along with the nearby expat town of Ajijic, which offers a picturesque escape from the city. With Cuba becoming increasingly difficult for Americans to visit, Panama City is a fantastic alternative for those looking for vibrant culture and historical charm. It’s a place where you’ll encounter people from every corner of the region, each adding their own flavor to the city’s dynamic atmosphere.
Panama City is a fascinating mix of the old and new. The skyline is filled with impressive, glistening towers, while the Panama Canal remains one of the most iconic landmarks in the world. Whether you’re indulging in high-end dining or enjoying flavorful street food, the city offers a wide range of culinary experiences. 19. Hua Hin, Thailand: A Less-Visited Paradise for Relaxation and Adventure
Located just a 90-minute drive from Bangkok, Hua Hin is a beach destination primarily enjoyed by locals, making it a perfect escape if you’ve already explored Phuket or Chiang Mai and are seeking something a bit off the beaten path. While many tourists flock to more popular spots, Hua Hin offers a peaceful retreat with plenty of hidden gems.
The area is full of surprises—there are jungle temples, caves, and hiking trails for those craving adventure, along with Thai wineries where you can sample local wines. The pineapple fields are a sight to see, and the pristine beaches are perfect for a relaxing day by the sea. Hua Hin also offers elephant sanctuaries, vibrant night markets, and one of the coolest hotels we’ve ever stayed at—The Barai. At this ultra-luxury resort, you can experience all-inclusive spa services at prices that make Thailand an exceptional value.

While cities like Tokyo, Seoul, and Hong Kong often take the spotlight, Taipei is a gem that deserves far more attention. This city has a lot to offer, from the buzzing night markets to breathtaking views from the top of Taipei 101. Whether you’re hiking up Elephant Mountain or wandering through its lively streets, Taipei presents an experience that stands apart from its larger counterparts in the region.
