Carved and rebuilt annually, the Ice Hotel in Swedish Lapland is truly one of the top winter destinations. Located in Jukkasjärvi, Sweden, this incredible hotel is crafted entirely from ice, including the beds, which are massive slabs of frozen blocks. Staying here is a one-of-a-kind experience you won’t soon forget.

While you might think the hotel is all about the ice, there’s actually so much more to enjoy than just the stunning art rooms. Beyond the icy rooms, there’s an entire world to explore—ice sculptures, ice bars, and even ice restaurants. It’s a great place for an unforgettable winter adventure.

If you’re seeking a winter getaway that’s a little different, the Ice Hotel is perfect. And don’t worry about freezing—it stays surprisingly warm inside, with cozy sleeping bags provided to keep you toasty through the night.

    2. The Blue Lagoon, Iceland

A standout winter adventure was our trip to Iceland, where we stayed at the unforgettable Blue Lagoon. This hotel, spa, and geothermal pool complex is a true gem, offering an incredible experience like no other.

Spend at least two days here if possible, especially if you’re craving a relaxing soak in the hot pools surrounded by freezing temperatures. The silica mud that surrounds the outdoor pools can be applied to your skin, giving you a fresh glow and a deeply hydrated face. It’s a perfect place to unwind and rejuvenate.

While the Blue Lagoon is a must-visit, be aware that daylight hours in Iceland can be quite short during the winter. But don’t let that stop you—the experience is worth it. For a more private experience, opt for staying at the Blue Lagoon Hotel, where you’ll get access to an exclusive geothermal pool reserved for hotel guests.

If you’re looking for a winter escape in North America, why not try Mexico? It’s a fantastic destination for the season, but instead of the usual tourist spots, why not experience it in a different way?

Small ship cruising through the Sea of Cortez with UnCruise Adventures offers a unique, intimate way to explore this hidden gem. Unlike large cruise ships, this is a smaller, more personalized adventure that includes snorkeling, kayaking, hiking, and incredible whale watching. The Sea of Cortez is often overlooked, but it’s an extraordinary place full of untouched beauty.

I’ve been whale watching many times, but this experience was by far the best. The chance to see these magnificent creatures up close, surrounded by beaches and crystal-clear waters, made this winter getaway one of my absolute favorites.

Having visited all of the Hawaiian Islands, I can tell you that each one offers something different, especially in winter. Hawaii is often associated with beaches, but there’s so much more to explore. If you’re trying to choose the right island, let me help guide you!

Big Island: Experience the life of a true Hawaiian cowboy by driving cattle with local paniolos. This adventure is perfect for all skill levels, including beginners. Don’t miss exploring the fascinating caves, lava tubes, and craters in Volcanoes National Park.

Kauai: Begin your Kauai adventure by visiting Thursday Poi Day, where you’ll immerse yourself in Hawaiian culture. Afterward, put on your hiking boots and capture stunning photos on guided hiking tours, exploring the island’s dramatic landscapes.

Lana’i: This lesser-known island is perfect for those who want a slower pace. Its small-town charm and lack of tourist crowds make it an excellent spot to unwind. From orange-hued moonscapes to towering pine trees, the landscapes are full of surprises.

Maui: Known for water activities, Maui was where I first learned to surf. But my standout experience was driving the winding Kahekili Highway, where each turn brings a new breathtaking view, all while soaking in the island’s laid-back Aloha vibe.

Molokai: For a true step back in time, Molokai offers a glimpse into original Hawaiian culture. It’s not flashy like the other islands—there are no resorts or high-end restaurants here, just a place to slow down and experience old Hawaii at its finest.

Oahu: Oahu offers a mix of adventure, history, and amazing food. While many come for the famous Waikiki Beach, I love driving around the island, finding secluded beaches, and going on local hikes. One of my most memorable experiences was attending an authentic luau at someone’s home, far from the usual tourist-filled hotel events.

    10. Morocco

If you’re looking to escape winter’s chill, Morocco’s warm desert sands are a perfect remedy. I traveled solo to Morocco, but joining a small group tour made the experience even better. It allowed me to dive into the culture without the hassle of logistics or the challenge of traveling alone.

Morocco is increasingly becoming a top destination, and it’s easy to see why. The country is full of rich colors, lively markets, and a culture that feels worlds apart from the U.S. It’s a safe place to visit, offering incredible experiences like wandering through the ancient streets of Fez, witnessing the traditional leather-dyeing process, and embarking on a camel safari across the Sahara Desert. Not to mention, the hiking opportunities are breathtaking and a must-do for outdoor enthusiasts!

Belize offers the perfect combination of turquoise waters and lush jungle, making it a prime destination for warm-weather adventures. I visited with my teenage niece as part of the Niece Project, where we dived into activities like caving, hiking, snorkeling, and biking. Between sweating under the sun and taking in the vibrant scenery, we found ourselves constantly immersed in the natural beauty of the area.

The palm trees lining the coast, secluded sandbars, and stunning sunsets with a margarita in hand made for an unforgettable experience. Whether you’re exploring the jungle or lounging by the beach, Belize has it all. While we mixed both jungle and beach activities, it’s easy to imagine getting lost in the serene coastal vibe and never wanting to leave them. It’s the perfect winter getaway to wash away any blues!

Sri Lanka offers a variety of experiences perfect for a winter escape, making it one of the top destinations to visit during the colder months. With warm, sandy beaches, surfing spots, turtles, and stunning golden sunsets, it’s a paradise for those seeking both relaxation and adventure.

Beyond the coast, Sri Lanka is rich in culture and history. You can explore ancient sites, enjoy tropical foods, or take on spiritual hikes. For nature enthusiasts, the safari parks provide the opportunity to see leopards, as well as witness hundreds of elephants migrating across the island.

I’ve visited Sri Lanka three times, and it never disappoints. Whether indulging in luxury or traveling on a budget, both experiences offer something special. It’s a place that caters to all kinds of travelers, offering a perfect balance of relaxation and exploration.

    13. Saba Island, Caribbean

If you’re craving a Caribbean getaway this winter but want to avoid the crowds, Saba Island is the perfect choice. Tucked away among popular neighbors like Saint Martin, Saint Kitts, and Antigua, Saba remains a hidden gem in the Caribbean.

What makes Saba stand out is not what it has, but rather what it lacks. There are no stoplights, no fast food chains, and no buildings over four stories high. With no cruise ships, crime, or even a beach, Saba offers a peaceful, crowd-free experience.

In just five square miles, you’ll find diverse ecosystems, challenging hikes, glass art galleries, and the famous Saba Lobster. The surrounding waters form a National Marine Park, perfect for world-class diving with pinnacles, drop-offs, and caves starting 40 feet below the surface. Don’t miss the island’s secret: Saba Spice, a homemade spiced rum with a different recipe in every family.

To reach Saba, you can take a ferry from Saint Martin or, for the thrill-seeker, fly into the world’s shortest commercial runway, only 1,300 feet long—just a few feet longer than an aircraft carrier!

    14. El Salvador

El Salvador is often overlooked as a travel destination, but it’s one of the best places to visit in winter. If you’re looking for quiet, unspoiled beaches and want to test your surfing skills, it’s a fantastic option. I went on a women’s surf and yoga retreat to Punta Mango Beach, where we stayed at a charming boutique hotel. The entire beach was ours to enjoy—an incredible experience for anyone seeking solitude and adventure.

We surfed twice a day in a progressive surf camp, improving our skills in a supportive environment. After each session, we relaxed our sore muscles with daily yoga led by a local instructor, making the trip both physically challenging and deeply rejuvenating.

El Salvador offers so much more for those craving adventure—steamy rainforests, smoking volcanoes, rich coffee plantations, and beautiful reef-lined coastlines make it a perfect destination for thrill-seekers.

If you’re eager to escape the cold and leave your parka behind, Key West offers a warm and sunny retreat. During winter, the temperatures are perfect for outdoor activities, and you might even find yourself walking around in a swimsuit.

I remember strolling through the Florida Keys in December, wearing my swimsuit top and shorts while walking the dog—definitely a change from the usual winter attire! It’s the perfect spot to relax, enjoy the sunshine, and forget about the chill for a while.

I had the chance to live there for a month during November and December, and it was a fantastic experience. The slower pace, paired with the scenic beauty, made it an ideal place to unwind. Austin isn’t typically known for harsh winters, but I had the chance to experience a rare winter wonderland there one January with a few days of snow! For the most part, though, winters in Austin are mild, making it a perfect place for those who want to avoid the cold but still enjoy a change of season.

During my time there, I spent most days in short sleeves and only needed a jacket as evening temperatures dropped. If you’re really up for a year-round water adventure, you can even swim in Barton Springs, a popular spot for locals, no matter the season. While I didn’t take a dip, it’s definitely an option for those who want to stay active outdoors, even in winter.
