Ljubljana, Slovenia, stands out as one of my all-time favorite budget-friendly European destinations. For those unsure about the pronunciation, it’s Loo-bla-na — and now you’re ready to say it right!
There’s something about this city that immediately captured my heart. Whether it’s the delicious food, the charming riverside café culture, or the fairy-tale allure of the city bathed in autumn hues, Ljubljana quickly became my favorite European getaway. It’s a place I keep returning to because it never loses its charm.
What makes Ljubljana even more special is its old town, a cobbled area nestled between the Ljubljanica River and the hilltop castle. This part of the city feels almost dreamlike, as though it were designed to be the perfect backdrop for a city that seamlessly combines history with modern life.
While I love my Scandinavian trips, which are often green, clean, and filled with quality experiences, Ljubljana offers similar vibes without the heavy price tag. It might not be the cheapest destination, but compared to places like Copenhagen or Stockholm, it’s a much more affordable option.

Funchal, the capital of Madeira, often goes unnoticed by many travelers, but it holds everything you could want for a perfect city break: charming cobbled streets, a scenic cable car ride, rich culture, coastal views, and delicious custard tarts. Plus, compared to Lisbon and Porto, it’s surprisingly affordable.
You might think, “Who goes to Madeira for a city break?” But I assure you, Funchal is a wonderful destination for just that. In fact, I’ve been going almost every year, and it’s always a great experience. The city itself is compact yet offers plenty to explore, and the pace of life is refreshingly relaxed.
Funchal is an ideal base for exploring the island. Once you’ve soaked in the local culture and done some shopping, take public transport to venture further afield. The city center is quintessentially Portuguese: laid-back, with a thriving café culture. Despite the reputation of Madeira attracting older British tourists, Funchal is home to a university and a youthful, energetic vibe.

And if you’re into good food and drink, Bratislava doesn’t disappoint, with a wide selection of cafés, bars, and restaurants waiting to be explored.

When people think of Croatia, it’s usually the stunning coastline that comes to mind, not city breaks. So, when I booked a trip to the capital, Zagreb, I was met with some puzzled looks. I honestly don’t understand why this city is so often overlooked because it turned out to be one of the most intriguing, hip, and budget-friendly European city breaks I’ve had. After visiting a few times, I can confidently say I’ve become a bit of an expert on Zagreb.
The city has a mix of fascinating recent history, amazing food, and craft beer that rivals many European cities. But what really makes Zagreb stand out are its quirky museums, most of which are either free or very affordable. For culture lovers, this city is a goldmine of unusual experiences.
Two museums that I highly recommend are the Museum of Broken Relationships and the Croatian Museum of Naive Art. The Museum of Broken Relationships is especially memorable. People from around the world send in items that represent a broken relationship, each with an anonymous caption explaining its significance. It’s an emotional yet humorous experience, where you might find yourself laughing one moment and holding back tears the next. It’s such a well-executed and thoughtful museum, and definitely a must-see.

And for those traveling from Western Europe or the UK, Bucharest is refreshingly affordable—I was able to enjoy three-course meals for less than £20, which is a real bargain.
That said, Bucharest isn’t without its rough edges. The train stations, for example, are in serious disrepair. But look beyond the dilapidation and you’ll find wide boulevards lined with Parisian-style buildings, a lively café culture, and a city rich with fascinating history. For anyone looking for an inexpensive, food-focused city break, Bucharest is an excellent choice.

What’s more, Faro is perfectly situated on a coastal train line, making it an ideal starting point for exploring the rest of the Algarve. When compared to larger cities in Portugal, Faro is incredibly affordable, making it an attractive option for budget travelers. 7. Gdansk, Poland: A Budget-Friendly Gem on the Baltic Coast
Gdansk is one of Poland’s most beautiful cities, but it’s far from being one of the most expensive. While it may not be the absolute cheapest of European city breaks, its abundance of hotels, restaurants, and tourist attractions makes it accessible to most budget travelers. It’s a city that offers a lot without breaking the bank.
Let’s dive into some of the prices that make Gdansk an affordable destination for a getaway. During my long weekend in November 2018, I stayed at High 5 Hostel. Two nights in a double room with a shared bathroom cost just 290 PLN (£60), including breakfast. The location in Gdansk’s Old Town was ideal, saving us money on transportation while being close to all the major sights.
When it comes to dining, vegan food in Gdansk is a great deal. A meal for two with drinks typically costs around 70 PLN (£14). I have to mention Manna Veggie Restaurant—it served some of the best vegan dishes I’ve ever had, and I would happily go back just for that experience!
For free activities, Gdansk has plenty to offer. Westerplatte, a significant historical site, marks the beginning of World War II and is a must-visit. Oliwa Park is a peaceful escape from the bustle of the city, perfect for a relaxing stroll. Architecture enthusiasts will enjoy the Oliwa Archcathedral, a 16th-century building blending baroque and rococo styles. Don’t miss St. Mary’s Church, one of the largest brick churches in the world.

8. Budapest, Hungary: A Dream Destination on a Budget
Budapest, with its sweeping views of the Danube, stunning architecture, rich food culture, vibrant nightlife, and stylish cafés, is a city that offers plenty without the hefty price tag.
Despite being more affordable than other European cities like Rome, Paris, and Vienna, Budapest delivers a remarkable mix of grandeur and charm. The city strikes a balance between old-world regality and a laid-back atmosphere, making it a fantastic place to explore.
A delicious meal in a Hungarian restaurant can cost under $10.00 USD, and a bowl of goulash soup for lunch might be as low as $3.50. Many of the city’s top attractions are free, like Fisherman’s Bastion, Great Market Hall, and Heroes Square. For a small fee, you can visit quirky museums or climb to the top of St. Stephen’s Basilica for breathtaking views.
While some must-see spots, such as the Szechenyi Baths, come with a slightly higher cost ($20.00 USD), Budapest’s overall affordability makes it easy to enjoy the occasional splurge without breaking the bank. This combination of low costs and memorable experiences makes Budapest an ideal destination for a budget-friendly European city break.

9. Girona, Catalonia, Spain: A Tranquil Alternative to Barcelona
Girona is the ideal European city break destination, especially for those looking to skip the crowds of Barcelona. Located in Catalonia, Northeastern Spain, this charming city offers the perfect balance of history, culture, and a much more relaxed atmosphere. While Barcelona is undeniably popular, it’s become overcrowded and pricey in recent years. Girona, on the other hand, provides a peaceful escape without sacrificing the beauty and character that makes Catalonia so special.
Getting to Girona is easy. You can fly directly into Girona or take a short 38-minute high-speed train ride from Barcelona. Additionally, Girona is well-connected by train, with even routes from Paris. It’s a fantastic option for a day trip or a longer stay.
Stroll through Girona’s medieval old town, where you’ll find narrow streets, ancient buildings, and picturesque squares. Don’t miss a traditional Catalan restaurant for a menu del dia, a three-course lunch complete with wine or beer. At just £10-15 per person, it’s an affordable way to enjoy the local cuisine. Girona’s beauty has even caught the eye of Game of Thrones producers, who filmed scenes here due to the city’s historic charm.

10. Ostrava, Czech Republic: A Hidden Gem Near Prague
Ostrava, located just a 3-hour train ride from Prague, is a fantastic addition to any trip to the Czech Republic. This lesser-known city offers affordable dining, accommodation, and an authentic atmosphere that many of the more tourist-heavy cities lack. If you’re looking to experience something different without breaking the bank, Ostrava is a perfect choice.
Unlike Prague, which attracts large numbers of visitors, Ostrava remains a hidden gem, and that reflects in its prices. You can enjoy a pint of beer for under £1.50, or sip a quality cappuccino for the same price. If you’re hungry, you can grab a hearty main course for just £3 during lunchtime. It’s the kind of budget-friendly destination that allows you to experience a city without worrying about steep costs.
Ostrava’s history is steeped in mining, and you can still see the remnants of that past in the city today. Reconstructed industrial venues, like the ones where the renowned Colours of Ostrava music festival takes place, offer a glimpse into the city’s industrial roots. The area is also home to green hills, once slag heaps, that provide a peaceful contrast to the urban landscape.

11. Warsaw, Poland: A Hidden Gem for City Breaks
Warsaw, the capital of Poland, quickly won our hearts during our Erasmus in the city, and we’ve returned several times since. It’s often overlooked, yet it truly stands out as one of the most underrated cities in Europe. From its diverse architecture to its unique charm, Warsaw offers much more than expected. You’ll find everything from the lovingly rebuilt Old Town to the distinctive communist-era buildings, alongside a modern skyline in the financial district that’s seen rapid growth in recent years.
Whether you’re into history, culture, or quirky attractions, Warsaw has it all. The city is packed with castles, palaces, and fascinating museums. Even after spending six months there, we hadn’t seen everything. For nature lovers, Warsaw is a haven, offering abundant green spaces and even two national parks just outside the city. The combination of urban excitement and natural beauty makes it a perfect destination for all types of travelers.
One of the best parts about Warsaw is its affordability. Compared to other European capitals, Warsaw is a real bargain. We rented an apartment in the Old Town for just 35€ per night, and even in the most touristy areas, you can enjoy a hearty meal—whether Polish or international—for under 10€. The city’s public transportation system is not only efficient but also inexpensive, making it easy to explore all of Warsaw’s attractions, many of which are affordable as well.
For accommodation, I recommend Arthotel Stalowa 52. It’s a beautiful, reasonably priced option, and a great choice if you’re looking to avoid the party noise typical of places like Prague and Budapest.
12. Plovdiv, Bulgaria: A Budget-Friendly Historical Escape
Plovdiv, Bulgaria’s second-largest city, is one of Europe’s oldest continuously inhabited settlements. It’s also an incredibly affordable destination for a city break. Whether you’re visiting on a day trip from Sofia or planning to stay a couple of nights, Plovdiv offers plenty of historical and cultural attractions without breaking the bank.
Start your exploration with a free walking tour to get a feel for the city. Admission to major sites like the Roman Theatre and the Ethnographic Museum costs just 5-6 Lev (roughly 2-3 Euros). These sites give you a glimpse into the city’s rich past, and the low cost makes it easy to experience the history without overspending.
You’ll find food in Plovdiv is just as budget-friendly. A traditional Bulgarian lunch at a local restaurant can cost under 4 Lev, and if you’re craving something quick, you can grab a doner kebab (said to be the best in the country) for an even smaller price. If you’re in the trendy Kopana neighbourhood, a glass of craft beer or local wine will cost a little more than a local brew, which can be found for under 1 Lev.
Accommodations in Plovdiv are also wallet-friendly. A bed at Hostel Old Plovdiv costs just 10 Euros per night, making it an ideal option for those on a budget.
For a slightly more stylish stay, I recommend Hillhouse Plovdiv. The grey and mustard color scheme is irresistible, and it offers great value for money.
13. Tbilisi, Georgia: A Budget-Friendly City Full of Charm
Tbilisi, the capital of Georgia, is an often overlooked gem in Eastern Europe. Steeped in history, architectural beauty, and cultural diversity, this charming city is guarded by surrounding hills and offers a vintage European vibe at every turn. Tbilisi feels like stepping into a different era while still maintaining its distinct Georgian identity.
For those traveling on a budget, Tbilisi is an ideal destination. The city has plenty of affordable accommodation options, with hostels ranging from £8 to £12 per night. The easy-to-navigate metro system, which can be accessed with a card costing under £1, makes getting around the city both simple and cheap.
Tbilisi offers a variety of food options, from traditional Georgian dishes to Turkish and Indian cuisine. A hearty meal at a local restaurant will cost as little as £4, making it a great destination for food lovers on a budget.
Many of the best experiences in Tbilisi are free or very low-cost. A visit to Mt. Mtatsminda, where you can enjoy panoramic views of the city, is an absolute must. You can reach the summit via a funicular railway for less than £1. Other must-see attractions like the Nirakala Fortress and the iconic Mother of Georgia sculpture are accessible by a cable car ride that costs just £1.50.
For a place to stay, I recommend the beautiful Comunal Hotel Sololaki for a more budget-friendly option, or the Vinotel Boutique Hotel, which offers great value and stunning style. Both are affordable and have a gorgeous aesthetic that makes for a pleasant stay.

14. Istanbul, Turkey: The Best Budget-Friendly City Break in Europe
Istanbul currently stands as one of Europe’s most budget-friendly cities, especially since the Turkish Lira took a significant dive in 2018, making it the go-to destination for travelers seeking great deals. Whether you’re into history, food, or vibrant city life, Istanbul offers a rich experience at a fraction of the cost of other European capitals.
During our 7-week stay this autumn, we explored the city across 3 districts—Kadıköy, Beyoğlu, and Şişli—and five different neighborhoods on both the Asian and European sides. Among them, Moda in Kadıköy turned out to be the most affordable spot, offering a real local atmosphere at a very low cost.
On average, we paid around £12 per night for a private Airbnb room for two people. To put it into perspective, Airbnb rentals in Moda cost between £28 and £60 per night for two guests, depending on the area. The value for money in Istanbul is hard to beat.
Food and transport are also incredibly affordable. A traditional Turkish breakfast costs about 50 TL (£7.30) per person, while a local draft beer is only 15 TL (£2.20). Public transit is another bargain—each ride with an Istanbulkart costs 3 TL (<£1), making it a cheap and easy way to get around the city. Taxis are also very affordable compared to most European cities.
If you’re planning a budget-friendly trip to Istanbul, here’s what I’d recommend:
- Stay in Moda, Kadıköy, and book through Airbnb for the best rates.
- Get an Istanbulkart transit card (6 TL), which offers discounts on every ride, making it cheaper than paying cash.
- Enjoy meals at Lokantas—traditional Turkish cafeterias that offer delicious, affordable meals.
For accommodation, I’d suggest either the stylish Doruk Palas Hotel or the quirky Dersaadet Hotel. However, Istanbul has plenty of boutique options to choose from, so you’re sure to find something that fits your style and budget.
15. Sarajevo, Bosnia: A Budget-Friendly European City Break
I love cities where I can enjoy a cup of tea in a cozy café without worrying about my wallet, and Sarajevo is one of those rare places in Europe where I don’t have to check the menu prices before sitting down. Despite Europe becoming increasingly expensive, Sarajevo remains an affordable city to visit.
As the capital of Bosnia, Sarajevo is one of my favorite European destinations. The old town, steeped in history, blends churches, mosques, and countless teahouses and traditional restaurants, giving the city a truly special charm. It’s a small city, which makes it easy to explore on foot—no need for taxis. If you do prefer public transport, the tram is under a euro per ride, making it a convenient and cost-effective option.
Accommodation in Sarajevo is also reasonably priced. With numerous hostels and Airbnb options starting from just 15 euros per night, there’s no need to break the bank for a comfortable stay. The real highlight, however, is the food. Sarajevo’s Bosnian cuisine is delicious and incredibly affordable. You can enjoy a full meal in a restaurant for less than 10 euros. For an even cheaper meal, try visiting a local bakery for burek—savory pastries filled with meat, cheese, or spinach, perfect for breakfast or lunch. If you’re looking for something simple yet satisfying, cevapi—Bosnian kebabs—are a cheap and tasty option, often costing only a couple of euros.
Sarajevo offers great value for money. With so much to see and do in this multicultural city, you can have an amazing experience on just 30-40 euros per day. It’s a place where east meets west, and the mix of cultures makes it a fascinating destination.
For a comfortable and affordable stay, I recommend Hotel Colors Inn, offering great value for the price.
