Now, I’m not claiming these countries are completely without risk—every destination comes with its own set of precautions. However, based on my own travels and experiences, I’ve compiled a list of countries where solo female travelers can feel more at ease while exploring new places.

1. Maun, Botswana
Maun is a small town in northern Botswana and often serves as the gateway to the Okavango Delta. Despite being a quieter town, Maun is home to some of the friendliest people I’ve met. The warm hospitality and welcoming locals immediately made me feel at ease when I arrived.
The true magic of Maun, however, lies in its proximity to the Okavango Delta, a massive, lush wilderness teeming with wildlife. I spent three days camping in the delta, experiencing safaris and breathtaking sunsets. The experience was surreal, and I felt completely safe during my stay.
While Maun itself is not a bustling metropolis, it offers a gateway to one of the world’s last great wildernesses. Although the town has low crime rates, I did experience some unwanted attention in the form of catcalling when walking alone, which made me uncomfortable. However, the beauty and serenity of Botswana, combined with its safe atmosphere, made this a destination I would happily return to.
Where to Stay: I stayed at Sedia Riverside Hotel in Maun, which was a great choice for comfort and relaxation. The staff was friendly, and the hotel grounds were perfect for birdwatching or simply unwinding after a day of exploring.
2. Abu Dhabi, UAE
Abu Dhabi is known for its safety, and it lives up to its reputation. During my solo trip, I felt completely at ease walking around the city. The people were respectful, and I could freely explore its many attractions, including the Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque, the Louvre Museum, and the beautiful Corniche Beach. The city’s modern infrastructure, well-maintained public spaces, and the respect for women’s safety all contributed to making my stay enjoyable.
However, it’s important to be mindful of the local customs and dress appropriately. I made sure to wear loose, modest clothing and a headscarf when visiting the mosque as a sign of respect. Abu Dhabi is a perfect solo destination for women who want to experience a mix of culture, luxury, and safety, all while learning about the region’s fascinating history and art.
Where to Stay: I stayed at Aloft Hotel during my layover, which offered luxury and comfort. With great restaurants and a poolside bar, it was a relaxing place to unwind between sightseeing adventures.
3. Iceland
Iceland is often ranked as one of the safest countries in the world, and it’s a dream destination for solo female travelers. From the moment I arrived in Reykjavik, I felt secure and welcomed. Iceland’s low crime rate, friendly people, and breathtaking landscapes make it ideal for solo travelers seeking both adventure and tranquility.
I spent my days exploring waterfalls, glaciers, volcanoes, and the famous Blue Lagoon, all while enjoying the serenity that Iceland offers.Iceland’s small, manageable capital, Reykjavik, feels more like a cozy town than a bustling city. Whether you’re exploring the countryside, chasing the Northern Lights, or relaxing in natural hot springs, Iceland offers something for every type of solo traveler. I felt at peace and completely safe during my solo adventure, and it’s definitely a place I’d love to return to.
Where to Stay: Reykjavik’s Skólavörðustígur Apartments were a perfect choice, offering self-catering facilities and a central location. If you want to escape the city, the Strýta Apartments in the countryside provide a more tranquil retreat with the chance to spot the Northern Lights.

4. Thailand
Thailand is often considered a top destination for solo female travelers, and for good reason. The country is known for its low crime rates, friendly locals, and a welcoming atmosphere that makes you feel at home wherever you go.
I spent time in both Bangkok and the southern islands, like Krabi, and had incredible experiences at every turn. The locals went out of their way to assist me on multiple occasions, whether it was helping me retrieve a lost purse or offering fuel when I ran out in a remote area.
Thailand offers an abundance of adventure, from the chaotic beauty of Bangkok to the peaceful, serene beaches of the islands. The warmth of the Thai people and their hospitality made it a safe and enjoyable destination for me as a solo female traveler. The country’s well-established backpacker trail also ensures that it’s easy to meet other travelers, should you wish to.
Where to Stay in Bangkok: Pho Place Hotel in Chinatown was a great budget-friendly option that provided both comfort and easy access to the city’s main attractions. The quiet lane off the road ensured a peaceful stay away from the city noise.
5. Paris, France
Paris has always been my go-to destination for solo travel. I fell in love with the city on my first solo trip in 2015, and since then, I’ve returned multiple times. The charm of Paris is undeniable, with its iconic sights like the Eiffel Tower, the Louvre, and Montmartre. Despite being a major tourist hub, Paris can feel incredibly intimate when you’re walking its charming streets, especially when you visit outside of peak season.
As a solo traveler, Paris offers the perfect blend of culture, history, and romance. I spent countless afternoons in Parisian cafés, reading a book or simply people-watching. The city’s laid-back yet vibrant atmosphere made my solo experience truly magical. Paris will always hold a special place in my heart, and I highly recommend it for women traveling alone.

Corfu is a beautiful Greek island that I’ve visited multiple times, and each visit makes me fall in love with it more. I’ve always felt safe here, and it’s a great destination for solo travelers looking for a laid-back beach escape with plenty of cultural experiences. Corfu is a perfect destination for those who want to enjoy a mix of history, nature, and Mediterranean charm.
Where to Stay: Paleokastritsa is the most beautiful area on the island, and I recommend staying in self-catering apartments like Paradise Apartments or Arianna Apartments for a local experience. If you’re after something more upscale, the Akrotiri Beach Resort Hotel is a wonderful option.

7. Riga, Latvia
Riga, Latvia’s capital, is an underrated destination for solo female travelers. I felt completely safe wandering the streets, even at night. The city is known for its beautiful old town, vibrant arts scene, and fascinating history. I particularly enjoyed taking walking tours, which allowed me to explore the city while learning more about its past. The Alternative Walking Tour was a highlight, showing me parts of the city I wouldn’t have visited otherwise.
Riga’s opera house and theater also provide excellent cultural experiences for solo travelers. I spent an evening at the opera, which was a delightful way to experience the local culture before heading out for a late dinner. The city’s blend of history, art, and warm hospitality makes it an ideal solo destination.
Where to Stay: I stayed in a gorgeous apartment with views across the river, and other great options include Allure Rooms or the Boutique Hotel Justus in the heart of Old Town.
8. United Kingdom
The UK offers a diverse range of experiences for solo travelers, from the rugged highlands of Scotland to the picturesque villages of the Cotswolds. I’ve spent years exploring various corners of the UK, including cities like Bristol and Bath, as well as the beautiful coastal areas of Pembrokeshire.
The UK offers a safe and easy-to-navigate environment, and I’ve always felt comfortable traveling alone, especially when venturing beyond the well-known tourist areas.
From the vibrant art scene in Bristol to the tranquil beauty of Dartmoor National Park, the UK has something for every solo traveler. Whether you’re hiking through Snowdonia or exploring historic Bath, the UK offers plenty of opportunities for solo adventurers to feel safe and inspired.
9. Belgium
Belgium, especially the city of Bruges, is a fantastic destination for solo female travelers. Bruges feels almost like a movie set with its beautiful canals, cobblestone streets, and historic buildings. The city is incredibly safe, and I felt comfortable wandering around at night.
The Belgian food—fries, waffles, chocolates, and beers—was a treat, and the friendly locals made me feel at home.
Bruges is a place where you can take your time, enjoy the architecture, and experience the local culture without feeling rushed or overwhelmed. It’s perfect for solo travelers who enjoy exploring at their own pace, without the crowds of major tourist hotspots.
Where to Stay: The ibis Budget near Minnewater Park is a great budget option. For a more charming experience, The White Queen B&B or Hotel ‘t Putje offer lovely accommodations in a beautiful part of town.
10. Portugal
Portugal is a fantastic destination for solo female travelers, and my experiences in the Algarve have been nothing short of amazing. The Algarve offers stunning coastal landscapes, charming towns, and fantastic opportunities for hiking, making it perfect for those who enjoy nature.
The region is very safe, and the locals are incredibly friendly, often going out of their way to offer help. Whether you’re hiking along the coast or enjoying a boat trip, there’s something deeply relaxing about exploring Portugal solo.
If you’re looking for a more adventurous experience, you can also rent a campervan and explore Portugal’s West Coast. The freedom of a road trip allows you to stop and explore hidden gems that you might miss in the larger tourist areas. I highly recommend visiting Tavira for a quieter and more authentic experience, far from the tourist-heavy spots.

11. Australia
Australia was my first long-distance solo trip, and it set the tone for my future travels. I spent a month traveling around the country, from Sydney and Cairns to Melbourne and Adelaide, and it was one of the best experiences of my life.

While hiking, I recommend joining group tours for added safety. Despite these considerations, the beauty and adventure that Australia offers make it one of the best solo travel destinations.

Spain is one of my favorite countries for solo travel. Whether you’re wandering the streets of Madrid, enjoying tapas in Granada, or exploring the beautiful coastline in Malaga, Spain offers a mix of culture, history, and culinary delights.
The country is generally safe, though it’s important to keep an eye out for pickpockets in crowded areas, especially in cities like Barcelona. With its lively atmosphere, rich cultural heritage, and great food, Spain is perfect for solo travelers looking to immerse themselves in local life.
One of the best parts of solo travel in Spain is the chance to indulge in the food and drink culture. Enjoying a glass of wine at a local tapas bar, or savoring a traditional paella, is an experience best enjoyed at your own pace. Spain is a destination that allows you to explore, relax, and truly connect with the culture.

13. Germany
Germany is a great destination for solo female travelers, with its mix of history, culture, and stunning landscapes. I spent several days in Bonn, a small yet vibrant city just outside Cologne, and had a wonderful time. The city is easy to navigate, and the public transportation system is convenient.
Bonn’s historical landmarks and cultural offerings made it an enriching solo travel experience. I even spent an evening at the opera and had the pleasure of striking up a conversation with a local, which led to a lovely dinner afterward.
Germany, in general, offers excellent infrastructure, low crime rates, and welcoming locals. The country is safe, and traveling alone is a breeze, whether you’re visiting larger cities or smaller towns. I felt completely comfortable walking around Bonn, even after dark, and I would love to explore more of Germany as a solo traveler.

15. Stryn & Loen, Norway
Stryn and Loen in Norway are hidden gems that offer a quieter alternative to the more tourist-heavy destinations like Geiranger. These areas are perfect for solo travelers who want to experience Norway’s stunning natural beauty without the crowds.
The Loen Skylift, which takes you to the top of a mountain with panoramic views of the fjords, was one of the highlights of my trip. The serenity and silence of the mountain, combined with the incredible fall colors, made for a truly magical solo adventure.
These small towns are ideal for anyone looking for a peaceful getaway in nature. The hiking trails around Stryn and Loen offer incredible views, and the region is perfect for a solo escape to reconnect with nature. Norway’s low crime rates and welcoming people made me feel comfortable and safe during my stay.
